You Carry the Burden: On Diversity Training and Hidden Bias

Today was a very interesting day for me as a business leader…We had training around sensitivity and understanding diversity, inclusion and hidden bias. What hit home was how little we are aware of our own self and biases around us.

While we were talking about such a sensitive topic one of my co-workers who was very brave shared her vulnerability and in the moment shed a tear. She shared a story with us where due to her disability she was constantly misunderstood and people had perceptions about her that she was trying to fight every day.

As a woman every day of my life I have had the struggle of proving myself over and over. Sometimes I have to prove my leadership, sometimes my talent and sometimes capability.

I am often challenged by being put in uncomfortable situations and asked uncomfortable questions.

I have realised over these years that the best way to tackle uncomfortable questions as a female in the corporate world is to honestly answer them. It puts the burden of the answer on the person asking the question as they now have to live with the answer which is not something I was willing to share initially( usually something uncomfortable).

This also makes sure that moving forward before asking questions that put others and uncomfortable positions they realise that the answer might do the same for them.

What would you do in such a situation? Let me know with a comment!

Till later!
