Monsoon, Munchies, and My Midlife Financial Crisis

They say life is a series of chapters, and lately, mine feels like a paperback novel with three incredibly mismatched plotlines. The first is a slow-burn romance with the monsoon season. The second is a tragic comedy starring me and a plate of samosas. The third is a high-stakes thriller that just screams “TAX DEADLINE.” Oh, and let’s not forget the painful side plot about my lack of sleep and the fact that I stupidly worked out my legs today. All of this, by the way, is happening on a Monday.

The rains, man. They hit different at 41. It’s no longer about splashing in puddles. It’s about that primal urge to finally be cozy. The air gets that magical, earthy scent, and my soul just breathes a sigh of relief. This is my cue to put on my stretchiest pajamas, grab a hot mug of chai, and pretend I’m a protagonist in a classic literary novel. The only problem is, my literary heroine always seems to be accompanied by an entire feast.

And here’s where the comedy turns tragic. I’m no longer a spry 20-something who can metabolize a week of binge-eating in a single gym session. Now, every morsel is a permanent resident. My body, which used to be a temple, has decided it’s more of a community pantry. The overeating isn’t just a physical act; it’s a profound emotional state, a form of self-soothing that screams, “I’m an adult and I can and WILL eat this entire plate of carbs while watching Netflix.” The rain feels so good, but the post-rain bloat feels like a punishment from the universe for all my bad financial decisions. This is all made worse by my legs, which are currently staging a protest after I forced them to do squats.

Speaking of bad financial decisions, we come to the final act: the tax deadline. At 41, you’d think I’d have my life together, but on a regular workday, I still act like a college kid cramming for a final. I’m huddled over a laptop, surrounded by scattered bills, receipts from a year ago, and a level of stress that could curdle milk. The guilt from my overeating, the sheer physical agony from my leg workout, and the mental fog from my severe lack of sleep create a perfect storm of anxiety. I have to laugh at the absurdity of it all—I’m a grown woman, a seasoned professional, and yet I’m brought to my knees by a government form and a few too many pakoras. All on a day when I have meetings and deadlines of my own.

So, here’s to the beautiful chaos of my mid-life. The romantic rains, the unapologetic indulgence, the cruel but necessary reminder that my adulting skills are still a work in progress, and the fact that I probably won’t be able to walk properly for the next two days.

Till later!
